While the rest of North America is sweltering in the summer heat, you could be enjoying cool Andean air and nabbing refreshing face shots. The South America winter, which is opposite of North America's, provides the opportunity for year-round skiing and unique cultural side trips. Ski Country in South America can be found in the high peaks of the Chilean and Argentine Andes Mountains.
Offering breathtaking views, the Andes are the second highest mountain range on the planet and some peaks rise well over 20,000 feet. Thanks to the high elevation, snow conditions at the ski resorts are typically awesome and most resorts boast 300-plus inches of snow annually. Generally, South America resorts are situated well above treeline, so there's no shortage of see-forever views and terrain for arching big turns. The accommodation experience at South American ski resorts is often akin to being on a cruise ship in the mountains, meaning that all-inclusive options are prevalent.
If there’s a grandfather of South American skiing, Portillo’s it. Skiing came to the area as early as 1890, and Portillo served as host to the 1966 World Championships for alpine racing.Portillo’s very low humidity combined with a 9,350-foot base altitude assures an ideal climate for producing legendary dry snow. Those in search of unbeatable views will love the resort’s setting next to the breathtaking Inca Lake, its moon-like landscape of rock and snow and its close proximity to the Western Hemisphere’s tallest mountain, Aconcagua. This annual festival brings together top Chilean wineries, both well-known and smaller boutique wineries, for a series of wine tastings, special purchasing deals, evening activities and more. Expert enologists will be on hand to provide guests with an in-depth background to the history of wine in Chile, the varieties produced and wine tastings.
One night of the festival will include an après-ski party and another will feature a visit from MOVI, the independent winemaker's association, who will present "Rescuing Chile’s Oldest Grapes."
In celebration of Chile's world-class wines, the 14th annual Top Wines of Chile Week will be held in Portillo. This free event will provide guests with the luxury of sampling wines from some of the best Chilean vineyards while attending informational sessions from the winemakers themselves.
The Wine Festival provides a second opportunity this summer for guests to learn more about the world of wine, and to—of course—sample from the best vineyards. Each afternoon guests will be able to wind down while enjoying different Chilean wines while chatting with the winemakers
